Thermal Stress Formation in a Functionally Graded Al2O3-Adhesive Single Lap Joint Subjected to a Uniform Temperature Field

This study investigates the strain and stress states in an aluminum single lap joint bonded with a functionally graded Al2O3 micro particle reinforced adhesive layer subjected to uniform temperature field. Navier equations of elasticity theory were designated by considering spatial derivatives Lamé constants coefficient thermal expansion for local material composition. The set partial differential mechanical boundary conditions two-dimensional model was reduced linear means central finite difference approximation at each grid point discretized joint. through-thickness Al2O3-adhesive composition tailored functional grading concept, properties predicted Mori–Tanaka’s homogenization approach. adherend–adhesive interfaces exhibited sharp discontinuous stresses, whereas nature strains along bi-material can be moderated gradient power index, which controls variation amount free edges also critical due occurrence high normal shear stresses. index influence distribution levels components only sufficiently volume fraction particles. direction particles not influential because field is uniform; namely, it upturn low regions so that neat adhesive–adherend interface particle-rich relocated.
